New Delhi: Google has removed at least 85 malicious apps, downloaded over nine million times, from Android Play Store. These applications, available in the form of TV, game and remote control simulator apps, were found to be the impersonation of an adware family.

“This adware is capable of displaying full-screen ads, hiding itself, monitoring a device’s screen unlocking functionality, and running in the mobile device’s background,” security researchers at Trend Micro, who reported the issue initially, said in a blog.

Among the 85 malicious apps, ‘Easy Universal TV Remote’ has alone been downloaded from the Play Store over 5 million times, the blog revealed.

On downloading and launching the apps, a full-screen pop-up ad appears on the screen. It will ask the user to repeatedly press a button to continue. With every click to continue, a new ad page will be displayed on the screen. At the end, the application would finally crash.

Some of the apps were also found to be tracking the screen unlocking actions. These greeted the users with display ads every time the device’s screen was locked.
