New Delhi: One of the world’s most popular messaging apps WhatsApp, now has an inbuilt lock for IOS users, that enables them to use Face ID or Touch ID to access the application. This new feature uses biometric authentication to only open WhatsApp and does not add any extra layer to the security blanket of the app. Meanwhile, WhatsApp will continue to allow its users to reply through notifications and answer calls without using the Face or Touch ID. With this update, iPhone users can now safely hand their phones in the hands of their friends and relatives without the fear of them checking their chats. However, this update will not block chat previews in notifications.

As far as the privacy pertaining to the use of biometric is concerned, WhatsApp will not get any data- as this authentication process is managed at the phone level, making extraction of any information nearly impossible.

Reportedly, this update was in the pipeline since October last year- when the Face and Touch ID were added to the beta version of the messaging application. In addition it might also be rolled out for Android users soon.
