New Delhi: In a major breach, a hackers’ group on Friday briefly took over the Twitter and Instagram accounts of Facebook, and also the official Twitter account of Facebook Messenger. The development triggered a battle of sorts between hackers and Facebook, with the tweets posted by the former being deleted and posted again.
The group identified itself as ‘OurMine,’ which recently also hacked Twitter accounts of several National Football League (NFL) teams and also that of ESPN.
One of the tweets posted on Facebook’s Twitter account said, “Hi, we are OurMine. Well, even Facebook is hackable but at least their security is better than Twitter.”
The same message was posted on Facebook Messenger’s Twitter account as well.
Acknowledging the hacking, Twitter, in an official statement, said, “Confirming the account was hacked through a third-party platform. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we locked the compromised account and are working closely with our partners at Facebook to restore them.”
Facebook, too, tweeted: “Some of our corporate social accounts were briefly hacked but we have secured and restored access.”
In the past, the group has also taken credit for hacking for social media accounts of the likes of Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself, as well as those of the likes of Jack Dorsey, Sundar Pichai and HBO etc.
