New Delhi: One of the most popular social messaging apps, with over 3 billion active users in 2024, WhatsApp, is working on new features for the platform that would allow its users to transcribe voice notes. Additionally, the social media platform is also testing a new feature that would enable users to create group chat events for their communities.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is exploring a new feature that will enable users to transcribe voice notes in a future update of the app. The upcoming feature will require users to download 150MB of new app data to facilitate end-to-end encrypted transcriptions. The transcription process will utilise the device’s speech recognition capabilities to generate transcripts locally on the user’s device, ensuring end-to-end encryption and user privacy.
This advanced speech recognition technology not only converts voice messages accurately into text but also provides users with a more flexible and efficient way to consume and respond to voice-based content. WhatsApp’s initiative to introduce this feature demonstrates a commitment to improving user experience and inclusivity on its messaging platform.
As per a WABetaInfo report, the new feature would allows its users to create events within community group chats. These events will offer various details such as a name, a description of up to 2048 characters, a designated start date, an optional location, and the ability to initiate a video call once the event commences. When the event starts, all community members who have accepted the invitation will receive a notification with the event specifics. Notably, these community group chat events will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring exclusive access for community members.
The introduction of the feature to create group chat events for communities is expected to enhance member engagement by streamlining the organization of virtual meetings, reminders, or special occasions within the community. This functionality will enable community members to remain connected and actively participate in relevant events, discussions, or collaborative activities, fostering a sense of involvement and community spirit.
