Google is working on a new feature for its Google Assistant which will reportedly allow it use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to answer a user’s phone calls. According to a report, by Android tracker 9to5Google, the new feature called “AI Replies” will allow users to generate “new AI-powered smart replies” based on what the person on the other end says when Assistant answers the call.

The innovative feature, which is still in development and does not have release date yet, will be added to the Phone’s app call screening feature on Android-powered smartphones.

The call-screening feature, which was rolled out with Android 12, allows users to filter calls and have the Google Assistant answer calls with an audio asking the caller “who is calling”. The feature was updated in March this year, allowing Google Assistant to respond even when the caller is silent. The tech-giant also added contextual replies to the call screening feature, allowing users to respond to callers who are silent over the call.

However, the feature still has several limitations as it only features a small set of replies users can choose. Additionally, it’s not able to understand whether the caller has a more complicated need.
