Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the national governing body for the cricket in India. BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world and the wealthiest sports association in the country. The board is responsible for the administration of all cricket activities in the country ranging from the selection process to training, organizing the championships and arranging the funds and sponsors. BCCI is a nongovernment society and was formed in December 1928 as a society and is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. Till eighteenth century, there was no administrative body to manage cricket in India. It was in 1912 that an all India cricket team sponsored and captained by Maharaja of Patiala visited England for the first time. Eight years after the end of World War I, two representatives of the Calcutta Cricket Club travelled to London in 1926 to attend the Imperial Cricket Conference. Imperial Cricket Conference is the predecessor to the current International Cricket Council. Technically, the two members were not an official representative of the Indian cricket but they were still allowed to attend the meeting by the then chairman of the conference Lord Harris. After the meeting, it was decided to send a team to India under the captaincy of Arthur Gilligan who was also the Englands Captain in the Ashes series. Gilligan in India then met the Maharaja of Patiala and others and promised them to press for Indias inclusion in ICC if all the promoters of the game in India come together and establish a single controlling body. The Maharaja of Patiala and others assured that a single controlling body will be formed and to form a single control body, a meeting was held on 21st November 1927 and the meeting was attended by 45 delegates which included delegates from Punjab, Delhi, United Provinces, Rajputana, Alwar, Central India, Bhopal etc. They reached the consensus to create a board for control of cricket in India and they took the unanimous decision to create a provisional board on 10th December 1927 and in December 1928, the BCCI was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. R E Grant Govan was the first president of the board and Anthony de Mello was its first secretary. The BCC was essential to ensure that the game of cricket advances throughout India. BCCI would arrange and control inter territorial, foreign and other cricket matches and also make arrangements to make different teams to visit India and to control all India representatives playing within and outside India.Currently, BCCI organizes domestic cricket competitions that include BCCI Corporate Trophy, Ranji Trophy, NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Irani Cup and Indian Premier League. BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world and it does not depend on the government for finances. They earn their income through the ticket sales, advertisements, broadcasting rights, kit sponsors as well as team sponsors. BCCI is in controversies as it has avoided taxes on its income and has claimed exemption in taxes. Although the income tax department withdrew this exemption in 2007-08, BCCI paid only 41.9 crore against its tax liability of 413 crore in the 2009-10 financial year. BCCI is also in controversies for not implementing the Justice Lodha Committee report despite getting instruction from the Supreme Court. BCCI and ICC were in disagreement over the WADA Whereabouts clause. BCCI was also against the Umpire Decision Review System (DRS) proposed by ICC. However, in September 2016, BCCI has given hints that they might be following the DRS system. BCCI is one of the most powerful boards of ICC and also has its influences on many of the ICC decisions.
