Google
Google is an American multinational technological corporation that has one of the largest search engines on the internet and is also famous for internet related services, products, search engines, cloud computing and software. The company was formed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were completing their Ph. D and the company now processes on an average over 40,000 search queries every second which translates to 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year. Google earns most of its profits through AdWords that it places through online advertising near the list of the search results. The head office of Google is called Googleplex and it is situated at Mountain View, California. Google was started in the early 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were completing their Ph D from Stanford University. The difference that made Google popular from other search engines was that their search engine analyzed the relationships between the websites and it determined the relevance of the website on the basis of the number of pages, its importance that linked back to the original site. This technology was called by them as PageRank. On the other hand, other search engines ranked result of the search on the basis of the number of times the search terms appeared on the page. Thus, Google had an advantage from other search engines. The founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin called their search engine as Backrub. However, they made it into a company and named it as Google Inc. on 7th September 1998 at a friends garage in Menlo Park, California. They named it as Google as a misspelling of googol that represents the number represented by a 1 followed by a hundred zeros. As they had the aim of creating a very large scale search engine, they chose this name. Google originally ran under the Stanford Universitys website with the domain google.stanford.edu andz.stanford.edu. After forming the company, Larry and Sergey hired Craig Silverstein, their fellow Ph D student as their first employee. After its formation, the company in February 1999 moved to 165 University Ave in California. Later it moved to a place called as Googleplex and it is still the headquarters of the company. The owners were finding it difficult to handle the company as it was distracting them from their studies. They then proposed to sell their company to the CEO of Excite for $1 million. He rejected the offer. Google received its first funding before Google was even incorporated. Andy Bechtolsheim, the co founder of Sun Microsystem contributed Google $100,000 before its incorporation. However, on 7th June 1999, Google received a major funding of $25 million from major investors that includes firms like Kleiner Perkins Caufield and buyers, Sequoia Capital. In 2004, Googles initial public offering took place and at that time Larry, Sergey and Eric Schmidt agreed to work together for Google for the next 20 years. The company offered 19,605,052 shares at a price of $85 per share. The shares were offered at an online auction. Google also made percentage of its money through America Online and InterActiveCorp. Google earns through advertising. Google receives money through companies or advertisers who want to sell their products to the masses. Google then uses Google Analytics to understand the profile of any person. Google Analytics studies the behavior of the person on the basis of the websites visited by them. Thus Google then displays the advertisement on the wall on the basis of the background received through Google Analytics. This helps Google to make the advertisement reach the right type of people. Google for the first time surpassed one billion visitors on its search engine in a month in May 2011 and experienced an increase of 8.4 percent compared to the 931 million visitors in May 2010. Google also owns as well has purchased many number of companies. Google products includes Android, Google Chrome, Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Books, Google News, Google +, YouTube etc. in August 2015, Google announced its plans to re organize its interest as a holding company called Alphabet Inc. However, Google has also faced criticism. Google has been criticized for using various strategies to avoid taxes. Out of the five largest American Technological companies, Google pays the lowest tax. The company accompanies this partly by licensing its technology through shell subsidiaries in tax havens such as Ireland, Netherland and Bermuda. Google also has faced criticism for search neutrality copyright, privacy, censorship of search results etc.
