The episode begin with Mala Mukherji , author of "Ashes," reciting a poem she had written for her mother's funeral. From the opening verse, ""I am my mother's child, nothing more, nothing less, and for that privilege I am forever blessed," to the closing "After nurturing us so we could bloom, you have returned home far too soon," I was in awe. Her scheme and tone are enchanting, and leave the listener hungry for more.

How appropriate for me to listen to Akaash Singh and Arjun Gupta's latest "American Desis" podcast featuring their Sharad Nani after spending some time visiting my own nani (maternal grandmother) this past weekend. Sharad Nani is not actually Singh or Gupta's grandmother, but she is an important figure in their lives. This podcast honed in on the importance of elders and duty in Indian culture, and the ensuing conversation was both heartwarming and relevant.
