Andhra Pradesh Assembly Election 2019

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Election 2019

The voting for Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections 2019 is scheduled to happen on April 11 and the counting of votes will take place on May 23, 2019, along with the Lok Sabha polls. The voting will take place on 175 seats in a single phase to elect the new government. The current Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) faces a stiff challenge from newly formed YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of former Andhra chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy who died in a chopper crash in 2009 while being the Congress chief minister of the state. After his father’s death, Jagan Reddy took control of the affairs and wanted to be the chief minister of the state but later fell out with the Congress party and formed YSRCP. The opinion polls so far have suggested a comfortable victory for the YSRCP.

In 2014, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act craved out Telangana state from it. In 2014 Assembly Elections, the TDP had won 103 seats out of 175. In the current elections, the TDP is facing a huge challenge from the YSRCP. After falling out with the TDP recently, the BJP is also contesting the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections on all seats. Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party is also a small player with some influence in north coastal areas.
