Anu Malik

Anwar Sardaar Malik better known as Anu Malik is an Indian music director and singer who works predominantly in the Hindi film and music industries. He has composed music and sang for over 350 different kinds of films and is a recipient of numerous awards and nominations. He was also a judge on reality television show Indian Idol.

Anu, who is known as one of the mega music composers of the 90s in India, made his debut as a music composer in 1980 with the film Hunterwali 77. After working as a composer in a good number of movies like Aasmaan (1984), Mard (1985), Begaana (1986), Insaniyat Ke Dushman (1987), Toofan (1989), Awaargi (1990), Ramgarh Ke Sholay (1991), and Laat Saab (1992), he came into prominence after winning the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for his work in 1993 movie Baazigar. Most of his productions have done well commercially also.

NOTABLE WORKS:

Anu was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for his work in 1984 movie Sohni Mahiwal and in 1994 movie Main Khiladi Tu Anari, and again for his work in 1995 movie Akele Hum Akele Tum. His next nomination was for 1997 movie Border, followed by another for 1998 movie Soldier. His work in the 1999 movies Haseena Maan Jaayegi and Biwi No.1 earned him another two nominations. But the year 2000 proved very successful for him as he won two awards and two nominations.

Starting off with nominations, Anu was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for 2000 movies Fiza and Josh, and then he won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction and Filmfare Special Award for his work in movie Refugee.

2001 TO 2015:

Anu's work in 2001 movie Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai earned him yet another nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and it was followed by a Screen Award for Best Music Director nomination for his work in 2003 movie Munnabhai MBBS, and a Filmfare Award for Best Music Director nomination for LOC: Kargil. His next nominations came for his work in 2004 movies Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (Screen Award for Best Music Director) and Murder (Filmfare Award for Best Music Director). He did win Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for his work in Main Hoon Na.

In 2006, Anu worked in the movie Jaan-E-Mann and received a nomination for Screen Award for Best Music Director. Then he won the Zee Cine Award for Best Music Director for the song Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from the 2015 movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Anu Malik was born on November 2, 1960 in Mumbai, Maharashtra to veteran music director Sardar Malik and Kausar Jahan Malik, and he has two brothers. He is married to Anju Malik and has two daughters with her.

CONTROVERSIES:

Anu was accused by Pakistani Qawwali musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan of copying some of his songs, including Mera Piya Ghar Aaya in Yaarana (1995). Anu claimed that he loved Khan's music and was actually showing admiration by using his tunes.

In October 2018, in the wake of the #MeToo movement in India, Anu Malik was accused of sexual harassment by singers Shweta Pandit, Sona Mohapatra and Neha Bhasin. Anu denied the allegations but the public backlash resulted in him stepping down as a judge on the Indian Idol show.
