Anupam Kher

Anupam Kher is an Indian actor who works in the Hindi as well as the international film industry. He has appeared in over 500 films in several languages and won two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards. He had made his Bollywood debut in 1982 movie Aagaman alongside Saeed Jaffrey, Suresh Oberoi, Dilip Dhawan, Bharat Bhushan and Raj Bisaria.

In 1984, Anupam starred in movie Saaransh alongside Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain, Nilu Phule, Suhas Bhalekar and Soni Razdan, and he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. The same year, he acted in erotic film Utsav alongside Shankar Nag, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Amjad Khan, Anuradha Patel, Shekhar Suman, Neena Gupta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Annu Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor and Kunal Kapoor.

Anupam holds the record for winning the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian five times in total for movies Ram Lakhan (1989), Lamhe (1991), Khel (1992), Darr (1993) and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995). He won the National Film Award for Special Mention twice for his performances in Daddy (1989) and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005). For his performance in the film Vijay (1988), he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

His international films include Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Ang Lee's Lust, Caution (2007), and David O. Russell's Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook (2012). Anupam received a BAFTA nomination for his supporting role in the British television sitcom The Boy with the Topknot (2018).

PERSONAL LIFE:

Anupam Kher was born on March 7, 1955 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh into a Hindu family. He finished his schooling from D.A.V. School in Shimla and in 1978 he graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. Before movies, Anupam had taken part in plays being performed at the Himachal Pradesh University. He is married to actress and BJP MP Kirron Kher.

CIVILIAN AWARDS:

Apart from the awards he has won for his numerous movie roles, Anupam was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema, and Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the arts.

AS OF 2019:

Anupam's latest on-screen appearance was in Hindi movies The Accidental Prime Minister and One Day: Justice Delivered. In the former, which is a biographical drama, he starred as former prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, and in the latter, which was a crime thriller, as a retired judge. He has been a part of the American medical drama television series, New Amsterdam, since 2018 and which was renewed for a second season, which premiered on September 24, 2019.
