Ashok Gehlot

Ashok Gehlot is an Indian politician belonging to the Indian National Congress (INC) party and the current Chief Minister of Rajasthan since December 2018. He was actively engaged in social political work even as a student and had been influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi at a very young age.

Gehlot, who represents Sardarpura constituency of Jodhpur as Member of Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan, came to the notice of former prime minister Indira Gandhi during the 1971 East Bengali refugees crisis. He had been serving in the refugee camps in the eastern states of India when Gandhi noticed his organizational skills during one of her visits to the camps. He was later appointed the first state president of the National Student's Union of India and successfully organised Congress' student wing in the state.

1980 TO 2019:

Gehlot was a member of the seventh and eighth Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1989, and then from 1991 to 1999 to the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth Lok Sabha. From 1999 to 2019 he was a member of the eleventh Rajasthan Legislative Assembly (elected in the by-election), twelfth Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, thirteenth Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, fourteenth Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, and fifteenth Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.

The positions Gehlot has held are, as a member of the Public Accounts Committee, Lok Sabha (1980–82), Union Deputy Minister, Department of Tourism (1982–83), Union Deputy Minister, Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation (1983–84), Union Deputy Minister, Department of Sports (1984–84), Union Minister of State, Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation (1984–85),
as minister of Department of Home and PHED, Government of Rajasthan (1989–89), Union Minister of State, Department of Textiles (Independent Charge)(1991–93), Consultative Committee on Communication, Lok Sabha (1991–96), member of Standing Committee on Railway (10th & 11th Lok Sabha)(1991–98), member of the Consultative Committee on External Affairs, Lok Sabha (1996–98), and as Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1998–2003, 2008–2013, and 2018 to present.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Ashok Gehlot was born on May 3, 1951 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan to Jadugar Babu Laxman Singh Gehlot and he had two brothers (his elder brother Kanwar Sen Gehlot died in 2018) and one sister. He completed his B.SC. in 1971, earned his MA degree in economics in 1973, and then his LLB in 1976 from Jodhpur University. He is married to Sunita Gehlot with whom he has a son and a daughter.
