Babita Phogat

Babita Kumari Phogat is an Indian wrestler turned politician, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in August 2019. She was named BJP's candidate for the 2019 Haryana Legislative Assembly election from Dadri on September 30, 2019.

Where wrestling is concerned, she started her career in 2009 at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab, where she won a gold medal in the women's freestyle 51 kg category. Babita came into the limelight when she won a silver medal in the women's freestyle 51 kg category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

2011 TO 2018:

After 2010, Babita won a gold medal during the women's freestyle 48 kg category at the 2011 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Melbourne, Australia. She followed it with a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships in the women's freestyle 51 kg category.

During the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi, Babita won the bronze medal in the women's freestyle 55 kg category, and in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, she won a gold medal in the women's freestyle 55 kg category. She then won a gold medal in the women's 55kg freestyle wrestling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Babita Kumari Phogat was born on November 20, 1989 in Bhiwani, Haryana to Mahavir Singh Phogat and Daya Shobha Kaur, and she has three sisters, who are all wrestlers. Her father was awarded the Dronacharya Award in the year 2016, and he trained her and her sisters in the sport. She is engaged to fellow wrestler Vivek Suhag, who hails from Najafgarh in Delhi.

They are a Hindu-Jat family, and when Mahavir first started training his daughters in the sport, he met with a lot of opposition from the villagers, who felt that it was not an appropriate sport for females. Since there was no proper facility for training in his village, his daughters wrestled with boys, Mahavir enrolled Babita and her sister Geeta at the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonipat.

POLITICS:

Babita Phogat was earlier a supporter of the Indian National Lok Dal but decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019 along with her father Mahavir Singh Phogat. She resigned from her post as sub-inspector in the Haryana Police and will be contesting in the 2019 Haryana Assembly Election.
