Cyrus Pallonji Mistry (famously referred at Cyrus Mistry) is an eminent Irish-Indian businessman and the former Chairman of India's largest conglomerate, The Tata Group of Companies. He was the sixth Chairman of the group and he held this post from 2012 to 2016. He was also the second non Tata to be named Tata Chairman of the Group after Nowroji Sakiatwala. As the chairman of the Tata Group of Companies, he was an integral part of major Tata Companies which included Tata Industries, Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals and Tata Motors. Apart from Tata, he has also served on the board of director of several groups which included Forbes Gokak, United Motors (India) and Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Mistry was voted to be removed as a chairman by the Tata Sons Board on 24th October 2016. After removing Mistry from the position of chairman, former chairman Ratan Tata became the interim chairman.
Cyrus was born on 4th July 1968 to Pallonji Mistry and Patsy Perin Dubash. Mistry has an elder brother named Shapoor Mistry and two sisters Laila and Aloo Mistry. His sister Aloo is married to Noel Tata, the half brother of Ratan Tata. His father is an Indian construction magnate and belonged to a Parsi Indian business family - The Shapoorji Pallonji Group. His mother is of Irish origin. Cyrus completed his schooling from the prestigious Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and went to London for his graduation. He completed his graduation with a BE in Civil Engineering from Imperial College, London. After completing his graduation, he attended the London Business School and obtained a Master of Science in Management. Apart from these, he also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Mumbai University.
The link of Cyrus' family with the Tata's go back to the 1930s. His grandfather first bought the shares of the company in 1930. The composite value of those shares as of 2011 stood at about 18.5 percent, making Mistry’s father the largest single shareholder of the company (which is other largely controlled by trusts). After completing his studies, Mistry joined his father's business and became the director of the Shapoorji Pallonji & Company. His father was the member of the board of Tata Group and later from 1990 to 2009, Cyrus served as the Director of Tata Elxsi Limited. He also served as the Director of Tata Power Co. Ltd until 2006. In 1994, he was appointed as the Managing Director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Under his leadership, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group expanded its construction business and achieved greater heights. The company took up large engineering projects, including the building of power plants and factories. Under his supervision, the companies' established benchmarks such as construction of the tallest residential towers, the longest rail bridge and the largest affordable housing project. Apart from this, he was also associated with the Convergence Media Private Limited India, and served as the Senior Vice President of Operations and Planning. He also served as the Senior Vice President of Business Development and Technology at DQ Entertainment (International) Limited. His father retired from the Tata Group in 2005 and a year later in 2006, Cyrus joined the board of Tata Sons and was named as director of several Tata Companies in addition to his posts in the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. In 2011, he was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Tata group and was also announced that he would take over as the Chairman of the Tata group a year later upon the retirement of Ratan Tata.
After the announcement, Cyrus Mistry resigned from Shapoorji Pallonji & Co and started to completely concentrate on Tata Group. On 8th November 2012, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Tata Power Company Limited and later on 20th November 2012, he was appointed as the Chairman of Tata Teleservices Limited and Tata Industries Ltd. Apart from this, he was also appointed as the additional director of the Indian Hotels Company Limited in November 2012 and was later appointed as the Non-Executive Chairman in December 2012. He was then appointed as the new Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata group on 28th December 2012 making him the Chairman of all major Tata companies which included Tata Industries, Tata Steel, Tata Chemicals and Tata Motors. Apart from these, he also served as the Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services Limited and Tata Chemicals Limited. Recently, after serving as the Chairman of Tata group for four years, Mistry was voted to be removed as a chairman by the Tata Sons Board on 24th October 2016. After removing Mistry from the position of chairman, former chairman Ratan Tata became the interim chairman and the group will be choosing the new chairman of the group by February 2017.
Mistry is married to Rohiqa Chagla, the daughter of the renowned lawyer Iqbal Chagla and the granddaughter of renowned jurist M.C. Chagla. The couple has two sons. Mistry is an Irish citizen and a permanent resident of India. He considers himself a global citizen. Apart from Tata Group, he has also been the Director of Forvol Intrnational Services Ltd, Cyrus Investment Ltd, Buildbazaar Technologies (India) Pvt. Ltd, Oman Shapoorji Construction Co. Ltd and Muscat Pallonji Shapoorji & Co. Pvt. Ltd. He is also a trustee of the Breach Candy Hospital Trust, Mumbai, and a member of the Construction Federation of India. He is also on the board of Imperial College India Foundation.
