Honda initiates recall for 4.5 million cars over faulty Takata airbags

Japanese automaker Honda today said it was recalling another 4.5 million vehicles globally, as a scare over a deadly defect in Takata-made airbags widens. The move takes to 24.5 million the total number of vehicles that the country's number three auto manufacturer has called back after the faulty airbags were linked to eight deaths around the world.

Japanese auto major Honda's subsidiary Honda Cars India today announced an investment of INR 380 crore on its second plant at Tapukara in Rajasthan to expand production capacity. The annual production capacity of the plant will be increased to 1.80 lakh units from the current 1.20 lakh units, Honda Cars India said in a statement. "The additional capacity is scheduled to be ready by the middle of 2016. This capacity expansion will generate a fresh employment of about 600 people in Tapukara plant," it added.

Honda Motor Co hurt by falling sales and embroiled in a crisis over defective air bags is replacing its CEO. The Japanese automaker said today that Takanobu Ito, its president and chief executive officer since 2009, will step aside in June and be succeeded by longtime executive Takahiro Hachigo. The unexpected decision follows the recalls of more 6.2 million Honda vehicles in the US and millions of others elsewhere equipped with air bags made by Japan's Takata Corp.

Honda Cars India: Honda's diesel engine car sales cross 1 lakh mark in India

Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) today said it has sold more than one lakh cars powered by its diesel engine in the domestic market. The company first introduced its 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine in India in April 2013 with Honda Amaze and was sequentially introduced in 4th Generation Honda City in January 2014 and mid-size MPV Honda Mobilio in July 2014.
