Indrani Mukerjea was born on 22 November, 1972, in Guwahati, Assam, as Pori Bora. She is a former media executive and HR professional. She was one of the promoters of INX Media along with her husband, former STAR (News Corp) senior executive and STAR India CEO Peter Mukerjea. Indrani Mukerjea is serving time in Mumbai's Byculla prison for women for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. The case came to light in 2015 when Indrani Mukerjea's former driver Shyamvar Rai confessed to the Mumbai police that he had helped Indrani Mukerjea and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in disposing of the body of Sheena Bora, her daughter from her first husband / partner Siddhartha Das. Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna allegedly murdered Sheena Bora because she was dating Peter's son Rahul Mukerjea from his first wife. Sheena and Rahul couldn't have got together, because he was her half-brother. Indrani and Sanjeev also reportedly wanted all their wealth to be inherited by Vidhie. In September 2015, Indrani Mukerjea confessed to have killed her daughter Sheena Bora. Peter Mukerjea was also questioned in the case but has distanced himself from the murder and also Indrani over time. Shyamvar Rai was actually arrested by the Mumbai police for illegal possession of guns, when he confessed his crime of aiding Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna. According to Shyamvar Rai, Sheena Bora was lured one night by Indrani and Sanjeev into a car. Her drink was spiked and the former husband and wife strangulated her. Shyamvar, Indrani and Sanjeev took the body to the outskirts of Mumbai in Raigad and set it on fire.
Even as her case is on in the courts, Indrani Mukerjea was in the news again in June 2017 in relation to a revolt against the female jail officials of the Byculla prison by the inmates. A lady prisoner was killed and allegedly assaulted sexually by the jailers in June. Indrani Mukerjea in her complaint said that the female officers beat her up and threatened her with sexual assault, as they thought she instigated the inmates to have an uprising of sorts against the authorities. The inmates were complaining about the lack of facilities, hygiene and good food inside the Byculla Prison for women.

At least 38 inmates including Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea, have tested positive for COVID-19 at Byculla jail in Mumbai, confirmed jail authorities on Wednesday.
Indrani Mukerjea had filed the bail plea on grounds of her deteriorating health condition. However it was rejected by a special court in Mumbai, stated news agency ANI on Saturday.
