Laxmikant Parsekar is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Goa. He is the 12th Chief Minister of Goa and was appointed as the Chief Minister of Goa on 8th November 2014, replacing Manohar Parrikar who resigned from the post of Chief Minister to become the Defence Minister of India. Parsekar represents Mandrem constituency in the Goa Legislative Assembly and he is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He has also held the post of Mines, Vigilance, General Administration, Personnel and Finance in the past. Born on 4th July 1956 at Harmal village, Pernem taluka of Goa to Yashwant Parsekar and Chandrabhaga Parsekar, Laxmikant Parsekar did his M. Sc in 1980 from Centre of Post Graduate Instruction and Research, Panaji, Goa (then included in Bombay University). He later did his B.Ed. in 1981 from the same university. Later he became the principal of Harmal Panchakroshi Secondary School in Harmal, Goa. Laxmikant Parsekar started his political career as a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha. He along with political veterans like Manohar Parrikar,current Goa Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar and Shripad Naik, current Union Minister of State for Health were instrumental in building the support base for BJP in Goa.In 1988, he was pitted as the BJP candidate against the then strong Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party candidate Ramakant Khalap from Mandrem constituency. BJP was then a virtual nonentity party in Goa and Parsekar was unsuccessful in winning the election. In 1989-1990 he was selected as the Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party Unit of Goa. He became the General Secretary of Goa from 1994-1999. In the 1999 Assembly elections, he lost the election once again. He was then appointed as the BJP President of Goa in 2000 and he held this post till 2003. In June 2002, in the fourth legislative assembly elections of Goa, he was elected and he defeated MGPs Ramakant by a small margin of 750 votes. He was re-elected in the fifth legislative assembly elections held in 2007. He was again appointed as the BJP President of Goa Unit in 2010 and he held the post until 2012. In the 2012 assembly elections, BJP posted a remarkable victory and won 21 out of the 40 Goa Assembly seats. He was re-elected in the election marking his third term as the Member of Legislative Assembly. In 2012, he was appointed as the Health Minister of Goa State. After Manohar Parrikars resignation from the Chief Ministers post Laxmikant Parsekar was the top contender for the post along with Francis DSouza and Goa Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar.Parsekar was then selected by the BJP Unit for the Chief Ministers post and he was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Goa on 8th November 2014.Parsekar is well versed in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English Language. On 14th January 2015, Parsekar condemned a proposal by Goas youth affairs minister to introduced ex-gay therapy centers to the state and the Chief Minister stated that the ministers proposal was ignorant and homosexuality is a natural gift. Parsekar has a clean image and has no controversies attached to his political career and he is expected to be the face of BJP for the upcoming assembly elections of 2017.
