Maithripala Sirisena: Once considered close to former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, Sirisena turned into a renegade in late 2014. However, his uprising against Rajapakse, who is alleged to be an autocrat was supported by Sri Lankans as Sirisena won the presidential polls with a hefty majority. He assumed the office in January 2015. Contrary to his predecessor, Sirisena is known to be a democratic leader and has taken initiatives to mend the ties with the minority Tamil community which were left isolated due to the divisive politics adopted in the post LTTE era.
