Manohar Lal Khattar is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the current and 10th Chief Minister of Haryana since 2014 after his party won the Haryana Legislative Assembly election. He is a former member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and he represents the Karnal constituency.
Khattar had joined the RSS in 1977, and after three years, he became a full-time pracharak. He worked as a pracharak for 14 years and then joined the BJP in 1994. He was Organisational General Secretary of the BJP in Haryana from 2000–2014.
He was appointed as chairman of BJP's Haryana Election Campaign Committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, and he subsequently became a member of BJP's National Executive Committee. The same year, Khattar was nominated as BJP's candidate from Karnal constituency for the Haryana Legislative Assembly election, and it was the first time that the BJP gained a majority in the state, with Khattar winning his maiden election by a margin of 63,736 votes.
Khattar was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party on October 21, 2014 and took oath as Chief Minister on October 26, 2014 becoming the party's first Chief Minister of Haryana. It is also for the first time in the history of Haryana that a first-time MLA became the Chief Minister.
Manohar Lal Khattar was born on May 5, 1954 in Nindana village of Rohtak district to Harbans Lal. His family had migrated to an area of East Punjab (now Haryana) from Jhang district of West Punjab Pakistan following the Partition of India in 1947. His father and grandfather took up farming in Baniyani village of Rohtak district and his family resided there.
Khattar had displayed a keenness for learning since his early school days, and he had excelled not only in academics but also remained in the forefront of debates, discussions and other extra-curricular activities. He finished his matriculation from Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government College in Rohtak, and then earned his bachelor's degree from Delhi University while also running a shop near Sadar Bazar. He became the first member of his family to study beyond Class X.
