Mossack Fonseca & Co. Is a law firm based in the Republic of Panama, in Central America. The firm is the fourth largest law firm handling overseas clients and has over 40 offices worldwide. The firm gained worldwide media attention after 11.5 million records of the firm pertaining details of some 2,14,000 overseas companies of people from across the world were leaked in the media. The firm was founded by German lawyer Jurgen Mossack in 1977 and joined by Panamanian novelist/lawyer Ramn Fonseca in 1986. In 2013, the firm was described as one of seven that collectively represented more than half of the companies incorporated in Panama. It is one of the largest firms in the corporate services industry but, according to the founder, it is only around 5% of the global financial services legal industry.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C., obtained a cache of 11.5 million records detailing the offshore holdings of a dozen current and former world leaders as well as businessmen, criminals, celebrities and sports stars.
