Padmavati is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film stars stellar performers like Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. The magnum opus is set to release on 17 November 2017. The film is touted to be a dramatized account of the 1303 siege of the Chittor fort in Rajasthan. Ranveer Singh will be seen playing Alauddin Khilji, the Turkish ruler of Delhi, who led the invasion with the motive to capture the beautiful and desirable queen Rani Padmini. Deepika Padukone will be playing the gorgeous queen and wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar, to be played by Shahid Kapoor. Aditi Rao Hydari was the latest member to join the cast of Padmavati and she will be seen playing Alauddin Khilji’s (Ranveer Singh) wife in the film. There are also speculations that the film will have a very special appearance by the elegant and ethereal Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, one of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s favourite actresses. The film began shooting in July 2016 and a major schedule just got wrapped up the last month. Throughout this, Deepika and Shahid kept us cued in about the shoot. We also heard reports of Ranveer Singh moving to a new home, closer to the Padmavati sets near Film city, Goregaon, Mumbai so that he doesn’t waste his time in commuting and can solely focus on his role sans any distractions. It can be recalled that before the star cast of the film was made official, several actors have been rumoured to be part of the film. Some of these names included Vicky Kaushal and Fawad Khan. There have also been reports that Shah Rukh Khan and Ali Zafar were approached to portray Raja Rawal Ratan Singh, but they didn’t agree as they didn’t want to play the second lead to Ranveer Singh.
But it was only in October 2016, that Bhansali officially announced teaming up with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures to produce the film with Padukone, Singh and Kapoor as the lead stars. In December 2016, Arijit Singh has also recorded a special song. The music of the film is also much anticipated since it is a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. He has composed the songs himself and Shreya Ghoshal is one of the singers who has rendered her voice for a few songs in Padmavati. Deepika Padukone has also shot for a Ghoomar performance, a traditional Rajasthani folk dance.
