The Premier League, popularly known as the English Premier League (EPL) and also the Premiership, is a football tournament founded on 20 February, 1992, as FA Premier League. It is a breakaway league from the erstwhile Football League that was founded in 1888. The Premier League competition today is held between top 20 English football clubs, with participation of certain Welsh clubs as well. The Premier League clubs act as shareholders.

The Premier League seasons are from August to May each year. Each club plays 38 matches each, so that it gets to play each team in the league twice. The Premier League is by far the most watched sports league in the world. At last count, it telecast in 212 territories to a staggering 643 million homes (i.e. 4.7 billion people). It beats the live telecast of any other sporting tournament or league in the world. Understandably, the broadcast rights are sold for millions.
