The Indian Presidential Election 2017 was held on 17 July and the counting and result date was 20 July this year. The current President of India Pranab Mukherjee's term expires on July 24, 2017. Although he is eligible for re-election, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already nominated its candidate for the presidency. Ram Nath Kovind(in picture), the former Governor of Bihar, has been nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the NDA to be elected the 14th President of India.Ram Nath Kovind is all set to be the 14th President of India, after having defeated Opposition candidate Meira Kumar in the Presidential Election 2017.
Ram Nath Kovind was always a strong contender for the post, being a BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) loyalist and also a Dalit. Former Lok Sabha Speaker and Diplomat Meira Kumar was the Opposition's candidate for the post of President of India. The people of India indirectly elected the president through the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members as well as the members of legislative assemblies.
"This is a very emotional moment for me. An ordinary person like me, being elected to this post, proves the greatness of Indian democracy," Ram Nath Kovind said.
The Opposition's meeting was attended by many bigwigs of the anti-BJP block. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and senior Congress member Ahmed Patel were in the meeting.
In a massive show of strength by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), its Presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind, now former Bihar Governor, filed his nomination paers for the upcoming elections for the next President of India.
Last month, Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind was on a family vacation in Shimla, when he and his family were denied permission at the Presidential retreat.
Signalling confrontation from Opposition's end, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said, "It is a preparation for the next election. The aim is to remove the BJP."
While the Opposition is thinking about talking to the Modi government for a consensus candidate, it is also planning to field its candidate in case government declines their offer which seems to be highly possible.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting lunch in honour of visiting Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth in which he has also invited Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
