Raj Babbar is an Indian actor turned politician and a member of the Indian National Congress party. He has been a three time member of the Lok Sabha and two time member of the Rajya Sabha. He is the current state president of the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh. He has also been a member of the Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal in the past. Born in a Sikh family in Agra, Uttar Pradesh on 23rd June 1952, Raj Babbar did his schooling from Faiz-e-Aam Inter college in Agra and graduated from Agra College, Uttar Pradesh. His parents are Kaushal Kumar and Shobha Rani. After his graduation, he trained in the Method school of acting at NSD which involved Street Theatre and after his training in New Delhi, he moved to Mumbai and started his career. He started his career with a well known actress of that time, Reena Roy and then gained fame for movies like Insaaf ka Taraazu and later became a consistent feature of the B. R. Chopra banner and did movies like Nikaah and Aaj Ki Aawaz. He later gained success in Punjabi cinema with his performance in movies like Chann Pardesi, Long Da Lishkara and Marhi Da Devaa. Raj Babbar had earned recognition for his performances in a number of art and commercial films before entering politics. He entered politics in 1989 and joined the Janata Dal led by V. P. Singh and later joined Samajwadi Party and was elected thrice as the Member of Parliament and he was elected as the Member of Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 1999. He was re-elected in 2004 for the second term in the 14th Lok Sabha elections. In 2006, Mr. Babbar observed that while Amar Singh has been promoting broker culture and having close links with criminals, the BJP appointed Rajnath Singh as party chief, who enjoys a clean image. After this statement, he was suspended from Samajwadi Party in 2006. After the suspension, he joined Indian National Congress in 2008 and he gained more popularity after famously defeating Dimple Yadav, wife of the ruling Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in the 2009 Lok Sabha by-elections and got elected for his fourth term as a Member of Parliament. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Ghaziabad seat but lost to the BJP candidate General V K Singh. For the upcoming 2017 assembly elections of Uttar Pradesh, he has been appointed as the Congress partys state president and Sheila Dixit has been announced as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Congress party. The Congress party has been in the opposition in Uttar Pradesh for the past 27 years and now the party wants to gain a stronghold in the state election.Raj Babbar married Nadira Zaheer, the daughter of noted theatre personality Sajjad Zaheer and the couple has two children Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar. Nadira Zaheer herself is a well known theatre artist. He later married actress Smita Patil who however passed away soon after giving birth to their son Prateik Babbar. Raj Babbar was in controversy after commenting that a poor person can have two meals a day by spending just Rs 28. This created a lot of controversy for him and his party and he later expressed regrets for his comments. In 2013 he compared Narendra Modi with Adolf Hitler which also created controversy. Raj Babbar was nominated five times for the Filmfare Awards and has won critical acclaim and commercial success for his acting powers; however he had his ups and downs in his political career and is currently concentrating on the 2017 UP assembly elections.
