Star Wars
Star Wars is an American sci-fi space adventure series. It is one of the most famous and successful franchises of Hollywood and started with the release of George Lucas movie Star Wars in 1977. The movie introduced the fans to a universe of possibilities and showed the presence of different planets in a galaxy that are in the midst of a civil war. The famous lines in a galaxy far far away during the opening credits introduce us to a world where a super villain Darth Vader leads the Imperial Forces that are out to stub the rebellion led by Princess Leia. She is captured but is able to release a message in the form of a holographic image in the memory of an astromech droid, R2-D2 who escapes with a protocol droid C-3PO desert planet Tatooine. The droids are captured and sold to Luke Skywalker who accidentally unearths the hidden message. He then meets a hermit named Ben Kenobi when R2D2 goes searching for Obi Wan Kanobi. He reveals that he is actually a Jedi Knight. Jedis are warriors who are able to harness The Force around all living beings and use it to bring order to the galaxy. When the forced is used for good it is referred to as the Light Side which is kept in check by the Jedis. Alternatively, however, there is a dark side to this force as well and that is harnessed by the evil Sith. Both of them use a Light Saber which acts like a sword of pure energy. The movie was an instant hit and George Lucas followed it up with equally well received sequels The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi in 1980 and 1983 respectively. The opening crawls of the two later movies were referred to as Chapter V and Vi respectively, signaling the possibility of prequels. The movie goes on to reveal that Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are actually twins separated at birth. Luke Skywalker goes on to become a Jedi and defeats Darth Vader their father who had given to the dark side at the time of their birth. The main characters of the trilogy became legends in their own right. Be it the 900 year old Jedi Master Yoda or the smuggler Han Solo and his co-pilot Wookie the Chewbacca, these were characters that were driving the sci-fi fantasies of fans. On the 20th anniversary of the release of the first movie, George Lucas released Special Edition of the Star Wars trilogy with improved special effects. The movies released to mixed reactions from the fans. George Lucas then decided to make the prequel and released the first chapter of the series titled Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 1999. He had declared that the prequel would also be a trilogy and was to detail how a powerful Jedi Anakin Skywalker becomes the evil Darth Vader. The Phantom Menace introduces a young Anakin Skywalker and also the queen of a planet Naboo, Queen Amidala. Jedi Mast Obi Wan Kanobi is only a young apprentice in the episode and there is an evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Obi Wan Kanobis master, Qui Gon Jinn who is a gifted Jedi and helps the rescue of Queen Amidala when the Galactic Republic leader Supreme Chancellor Valorum orders war ships to attack Naboo. During their escape, Qui Gon Jinn comes across the young Skywalker and senses a strong force around the young boy who is a gifted pilot and a brilliant engineer. He takes up the task of training Anakin Skywalker and plans to take him to the Jedi Temple to seek permission from the Jedi Council. Council supreme Yoda senses strong emotions in Anakin Skywalker and is not convinced that he should be trained for Jedi. However, in a turn of events Qui Gon is mortally wounded by Darth Maul who is then killed by Obi Wan Kanobi. Before he dies, Qui Gon Jinn asks his apprentice Obi Wan to ensure that Anakin Skywalker becomes a Jedi. He promises his mentor and takes up the case again with the Council. Obi Wan is then made into a Jedi Knight and they agree to let him train Anakin. The movie was a huge commercial success and two episodes followed swiftly. Episode II: Attack of the Clones was released in 2002 and final episode to complete the prequel, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005. The story goes on to showcase how the young Jedi falls in love with Padme, Queen Amidala and eventually is corrupted by Sith to turn to the Dark Side. Padme dies during child birth due to a mistaken attack by Anakin Skywalker himself who in a fight with Obi Wan Kanobi is burnt badly. However, the force is still very strong in Skywalker and he is reborn as Darth Vader. Padme delievers twins a boy and girl, which grow to be Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The franchise continues to have a strong fan following across age groups and attract a new set with every release. The light sabers, role of Darth Vader and the May the Force be with you continues to be used by fans across the world. In 2012 Disney bought the franchise from Lucas Films and another decade later the franchise came up with the sequel to the original trilogy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh episode of the saga in 2015. The movie was directed by J.J Adams and went on to become one of the highest grosser. Fans flocked to the screens to see their old stars in all their glory and Harrison Ford made over $20 million for this one single movie when he reprised the role of Han Solo in the sequel, famously 50 times more than he had made in the original trilogy. The film did a record breaking business of $57 million in its previews of Thursday night and opened to box offices on Friday with the opening day collections of $119.1 million from 14,300 screens worldwide. It went on to be the biggest single and opening day record. Overall the movie did a business of over $2 billion and is set to have two sequels Episode VIII and Episode IX.
