Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is an Indian Cricketer and is considered as an all rounder. He is a left handed middle order batsman and an occasional off spin bowler. He is considered as one of the best fielders of the world. He represents Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy and is the captain of Gujarat Lions in Indian Premiere League (IPL). He has also been associated with Chennai Super Kings in the past. Raina has many records to his name and has been the youngest captain of the Indian Cricket team. He is known for his aggressive batting style and he is the one of the two Indian batsmen to score a century in all three formats of international cricket. He is the highest run scorer and has the highest catches in IPL. He has represented India in 2011 as well as 2015 World Cup.

Suresh Raina was born on 27th November 1986 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh to Kashmiri Pandit family. His father, Tirlokchand Raina worked in Ordnance Factory in Muradnagar and his mother, Parvesh Raina is a homemaker. Raina has three elder brothers Dinesh, Naresh and Mukesh and an elder sister Renu. Raina was interested in cricket since his childhood and at the age of 15, he shifted to Lucknow to attend the specialist government sports college. He kept on practicing cricket and trained very hard to become the captain of Uttar Pradesh Under 16 team and two years later, was selected in the Under 19 team for the U-19 England Tour. In the tour, he made two half centuries in the U-19 test matches and then toured Sri Lanka in the U-17 team. He was then selected in the domestic cricket and played in the Ranji Trophy for Uttar Pradesh and made his debut in 2003 against Assam but then didn't play until the following season. Later he toured Pakistan for the U-19 Asian ODI Championship and was later selected for the 2004 U-19 World Cup and scored three half centuries in the tournament. He was then awarded the Border - Gavaskar Scholarship and went to train at the Australia Cricket Academy. In 2005, he made his first class debut in limited overs and scored 645 runs in the season at an average of 53.75. After the injury of Sachin Tendulkar and suspension of Saurav Ganguly, he was selected for the Indian Oil Cup 2005 held in Sri Lanka. He had a difficult beginning and was dismissed at the first ball by Muttiah Muralitharan in his international match. He didn't score well in the tournament and made a total of 37 runs at an average of 12.33. After the return of Ganguly, he was omitted from the Zimbabwe Tour. He was again included in the team after the injury of Mohammad Kaif and he played in five matches against Sri Lanka and scored an important 39 runs in the fourth ODI that helped India in winning the match. He was again removed from the team after the return of Kaif. He got his next chance to perform in the middle order in the Tour of Pakistan after Virender Sehwag was injured. He was also called upon for the test squad in the test series against England but he did not play a single test match. In the subsequent ODI series that followed, he won his first Man of the Match award after he scored an unbeaten 81. He scored two more half centuries and was awarded a C-Grade contract from the BCCI. In June 2008, he scored his maiden century against Hong Kong during the 2008 Asia Cup. He then scored 84 against Pakistan and 107 against Bangladesh and won the Man of the Match three times in a row. This helped him to be a member of the Indian cricket team. He was included in the 2010 World Twenty 20 and he scored 101 from 60 balls against South Africa and became the third player to score an international Twenty20 Century. Later, he got selected in the triangular ODI tournament and scored 106 against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh and helped India to make a total of 245 runs at a time when India was struggling at 60/5. He was also included in the test squad during the 2010 South Africa's Tour of India but wasn't included in the playing XI. He was then selected as the captain for the Tri Series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and he won only one match against Sri Lanka in his captaincy. He was later selected in the test squad against Sri Lanka. He made his test debut in the second test and made a century in his debut and also made a double century partnership with Sachin Tendulkar. He was selected in the 2011 World Cup Squad but wasn't included in the playing XI until half point of the tournament. He was selected in the playing XI after Virender Sehwag was injured and he played against West Indies. He was again included in the quarter final match against Australia and he along with Yuvraj Singh made a successful run chase and helped India to reach the semi finals. He played a vital role in helping India to win the World Cup. After the World Cup, India toured West Indies and Gautam Gambhir was named as the captain whereas Raina was selected as the Vice Captain. However, due to injury Gambhir was ruled out and Raina was made the Captain. Under his captaincy, India won the series and his captaincy was appreciated by the legends. He was then selected for the England Tour and in the first test match played at Lords, he made a half century but managed just 27 runs from the remaining seven innings. He struggled against short bowling and in the final test was out for a duck after playing 29 balls. He was selected in the 2012 Tour of Sri Lanka, and in the first ODI played, he scored 50 runs and helped India reach 314 runs. In the third ODI, he scored 65 runs and took 5 wickets and was declared as the Man of the Match. His form continued and he scored another half century in the fourth match but in the fifth match was out for a duck. He was also a part of the 2012-13 England tour of India he scored 277 runs in the series at an average of 92.33 and won the Man of the Series. He also crossed 4000 runs and also broke in the ICC top 10 ranking batsman. He was a part of the 2015 world cup and scored two half centuries and a century against Zimbabwe and helped India to reach the semi finals of the tournament.

Raina married Priyanka Chaudhary on 3rd April 2015 and the couple has a daughter named Gracia Raina. Raina has also lent his voice to the soundtrack of the movie Meeruthiya Gangster. He currently is the captain of Gujarat Lions in Indian Premiere League (IPL). He has also been associated with Chennai Super Kings in the past.
