Decrees passed in the Sutlej- Yamuna Link (SYL) canal dispute between Punjab and Haryana cannot be flouted, the Supreme Court warned today, directing both the states to strictly implement its orders.

The apex court had earlier in November 2016, termed the law passed by Punjab government in 2004 to terminate the SYL canal water sharing agreement with neighbouring states as "unconstitutional".

"Besides, if Punjab has validly terminated the agreement dated December 31, 1981 and all agreements related to the Ravi-Beas waters and has discharged from its obligation under the said agreements," he said.

Badal's comment came a day after the Government of Haryana returned a cheque for Rs.191.75 crores to the Punjab Government following its refusal to accept poll-bound Punjab's push to pass a bill to return the land acquired for the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal.
