Toyota Motor Corp will buy 13 milliom air-bag inflators from smaller parts maker Nippon Kayaku, instead of Takata Corp to reduce the risk of potentially lethal air-bag inflators.

Japanese automaker Honda today said it was recalling another 4.5 million vehicles globally, as a scare over a deadly defect in Takata-made airbags widens. The move takes to 24.5 million the total number of vehicles that the country's number three auto manufacturer has called back after the faulty airbags were linked to eight deaths around the world.

Toyota, the Japanese automaker has issued a recall of 7,100 units of the Corolla premium sedan. The sedans so recalled are to fix a malfunction in the front passenger airbags, which were supplied by Takata. The Corollas manufactured between April 2007 and July 2008 will come under this recall.

Toyota and Nissan, Japan's two top automakers, today said they will recall more than three million more cars globally because of concerns over airbags involved in eight deaths worldwide. "Toyota will now globally expand its recalls to involve approximately 2,860,000 additional vehicles equipped with certain front passenger airbag inflators," the automaker said in an email.

The president of embattled Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corp. stepped down over an airbag scandal linked to at least five deaths that have sparked the recall of millions of vehicles. The company also announced pay cuts for top executives, who have faced a barrage of criticism for remaining largely silent on the brewing crisis, amid claims that the firm hid evidence of the defects for years. Stefan Stocker resigned from his post but will stay on the company's board, while Chairman Shigehisa Takada will take on the Swiss executive's role, in addition to his current job.

BMW has agreed to demands from the government to replace driver's-side air bags across the entire US. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been pushing companies to recall older cars with air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. They can explode with too much force and spew shrapnel at drivers and passengers. At least five deaths have been blamed on Takata inflators.

After a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in June 2014, Mazda Motor Corp had conducted a regional recall of vehicles, which had passenger-side front-seat air bags supplied by Takata Corp. On Thursday the Japanese automakers announced that now they will be expanding their recall to other US states also.

An explosion involving a defective airbag killed a woman in Malaysia, bringing to five the number of deaths believed to be linked to a flaw in parts made by embattled Japanese firm Takata, Honda said today. The previous four cases happened in the United States, but Honda said one woman died in a July crash after an abnormal rupture of a Takata-made airbag.
