Brainchild of the programmers working at the podcasting company Odeo Inc. in San Francisco, Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone. The board members of the Odeo Company had a daylong brainstorming session and during the meeting Jack Dorsey introduced the idea of one person communicating with a small group using an SMS service. They named the project Twttr as it fit the five character length of American SMS as well as it sounded similar to Flickr. Dorsey sent the first Twitter message on 21st March 2006 and the tweet was just setting up my twttr. The first version of Twitter was used only for the Odeo employees. On 15th July 2006 they introduced the complete version for anyone to use. A new company called Obvious Corporation was started by Biz Stone, Evan Williams, Dorsey and other members of Odeo in October 2006 and they bought Odeo and all the property including odeo.com and Twitter.com. in April 2007, Twitter became a separate company. Twitter started gaining popularity in the 2007 South by Southwest festival and during the event, the Twitter usage increased from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000. The company set up two large computer screens in the hallways of the conference that showed the Twitter messages and people started to tweet as well as look at the tweets done by other people. The panelist as well as speakers talked about Twitter and appreciated it in a positive way. Bloggers like Scott Beale appreciated Twitters effort at the festival and the Twitter staff won the festivals Web Award prize and they said "we'd like to thank you in 140 characters or less. And we just did! The company experienced rapid growth and t had 4,00,000 tweets posted in every quarter of 2007 and this grew up to 100 million tweets posted per quarter in 2008. In February 2010, Twitter users started to send 50 million tweets per day and by March 2010, the company recorded over 70,000 registered applications. As of March 2011, 140 million tweets were sent per day. Twitter experienced high usage during major events. For example, during 2010 FIFA World Cup, fans wrote 2940 tweets per second after Japan Scored against Cameroon on June 14. The record was broken in the 2010 NBA Finals when 3085 tweets per second were posted and then the record was broken when 3283 tweets per second at the Japans victory over Denmark. Twitters servers crashed after users were updating their status to include the words Michael Jackson at a rate of 100,000 tweets per hour after the death of Michael Jackson. Twitter has been identifiable worldwide by its signature bird logo. However, the original logo was the words twitter written in blue and it was in use from its launch in March 2006 until September 2010. A slightly different version was launched after the website underwent its first redesign. On 5th June 2012, Twitter unveiled its third logo redesign with an updated icon named Twitter Bird.
