UEFA Champions League
UEFA Champions league is an annual football competition in the European continent organized by the Union of European Football Associations and the league is contested by the top division European clubs. The league is considered as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and it is considered as the most prestigious football club competition in the European football. Before 1992, the competition was initially a knockout tournament open to the champions club of every country. The league was known as European Champion Club Cup and it had been running since 1955. UEFA Champions League was introduced in 1992 and it replaced the European Cup and there were also changes made in the game. The format was expanded and a round robin group stage was included where the runner up teams of the clubs were incorporated which helped the Europeans strongest leagues to enter up to four teams in the competition and from 2015-16 up to five teams can be included in the league. For example, the Spanish League can get 4 Spanish clubs in the competition compared to the Kazakhstan League that gets only one team in the competition. The league begins in mid July with the knockout qualifying matches and then the 10 surviving teams join the other 22 teams that have been already qualified by winning their respective leagues. These 32 teams are then divided into eight groups and every group consists of four teams and each plays with other teams in one home and one away match. Then the eight winners and eight runner ups proceed further in the knock out stage and the final match happens in the month of May. The winner of the league qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup as well as UEFA Super Cup. The most successful team in the history of this league is Real Madrid. Real Madrid has won the tournament 11 times including its first five seasons. In the history of the league, 22 teams have won the competition out of which 12 clubs have won it more than once. After the change of structure of the team, no team has been able to win consecutive wins. The current champions of the league are Real Madrid who won their eleventh title in the 2016 final after defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties after a 1-1 tie. The winner of the league is presented with the European Champions Club Cup that has been awarded since 1967. Any team that wins the cup three years in a row or has won more than five cups overall gets the right to retain a full-sized replica of the trophy.
