Vidya Balan is a famous Hindi Film Actress, known for her path breaking roles like Parineeta, Dirty Picture and Kahani. Vidya Balan was born on 1 January 1978 to a Tamil family. Her father, Mr. P. R. Balan, is the Executive Vice-President of Digicable while her mother is a home maker. She has an elder sister, Priya works in the field of advertising. Vidya always aspired to work in the films and got her first break in Ekta Kapoors famous tele serial, Hum Paanch where she got the role of Radhika, a nerdy teenager. Her family whole heartedly supported her decision but insisted that she complete her education as well. Keeping them satisfied, she completed her graduation in sociology from Mumbai Universitys St. Xaviers College. She even did her masters in the same course from University of Mumbai. Vidya Balans journey to a successful film star was not very easy. She tried her hands in many projects that never saw the light of the day. During her masters she got the offer to work against Mohanlal in a Malyalam film Chakram. Due to different circumstances the film was shelved. Following this, she started working on another Makyalam film but soon left as she was not comfortable working in the genre. Her debut seemed to be jinxed and she started doing various commercials. She acted in about 60 commercials and also did music videos for Euphoria and Shubha Mudgal. Finally she got her first big break in a Bengali movie Bhalo Theko which released in 2003 and was very well received. She even won an Anandalok Purashkar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Anandi. After her debut she was signed up by Pradeep Sarkar (who had directed her music videos) for a musical drama Parineeta. It was an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyayas novel of the same name. In the movie she was cast as the female lead opposite Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. The movie was a big success and Vidya Balan was appraised for her work. The movie was released in 2005 following which Vidya Balan worked in Raju Hirania Lage raho Munna Bhai opposite Sanjay Dutt. She even had a small yet significant role in Mani Ratnams Guru as a girl suffering from multiple sclerosis. She seemed to be doing too well when things started to rock. Her subsequent releases like Heyy Baby, Salam e Ishq and even Eklavya failed commercially. Vidya Balan faced a lot of ire from media for her dressing sense and poor make up. She was then seen in Priyadarshans Bhool Bhulaiya in 2007 which was a remake of a Malyalam hit movie. The movie also starred Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel and Paresh Rawal. Vidya Balans character of Avni who is suffering from dissociative personality was much appreciated and the movie got both commercial success as well as critical acclaim. Vidyas fortunes, however did not hold steady and her next movies Halla Bol and Kismat Konnection both bombed at the box office. By 2009 Vidya Balan was more of less written off by the film fraternity but she made a comeback with movies of critical acclaim and national success. She played the mother of Amitabh Bachchan in Paa. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a 12 year old boy suffering from progeria syndrome which makes the body age at an accelerated pace while the mind develops at a normal pace. The movie also had Abhishek Bachchan playing the role of Amitabh Bachchans father. The movie also stared Rani Mukherjee. The movie was a commercial and critical success. Vidya however shot to limelight by her sexy portrayal of southern film actress Silk Smitha in Ekta Kapoors A Dirty Picture. The movie also starred Emraan Hahmi, Tushaar Kapoor and Naseerudin Shah. Fans and critics all went crazy by her successful personification of a bold woman who goes out to define her success on the back of her sex appeal. Her acting of first a bold woman and then a woman thwarted by the same people who swooned over her was flawless. No wonder she was a Fimfare Award, a Screen Award as well as a National Award for her role in the movie. She was seen next in Kahaani, a mystery drama and though the movie was a moderate hit, Vidya Balan was appreciated. In the same year (2012) Vidya got married to long time beau Sidharth Roy Kapoor the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures in a small private affair at their residence in Bandra, Mumbai.
