World Population Day 2017 falls on 11 July. World Population Day is celebrated on the fixed date of 11 July every year, and was first observed in 1990 by the United Nations (UN), marked by 90 countries. The day marks the importance of increasing awareness about population, of controlling population and childbirth through safe sex and use of contraceptives. Millions of women around the globe have unplanned pregnancies because they do not have a choice. World Population Day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989. It came after the event of the Day of Five Billion, observed on 11 July, 1987. The UN General Assembly continues to observe World Population Day on July 11 every year to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development.
The theme of this year's World Population Day is Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations and Geeta could not have timed her enlightening pledge better.

At least 37 country governments, 16 private companies, and 11 partner organisations are coming together to announce their commitments to the Family Planning through expansion of modern forms of contraception to over 120 million women.
