Wriddhiman Saha is a cricketer who plays international and Test matches for the Indian national team as well as domestic cricket for Bengal. He made his Test debut on February 6, 2010 as a specialist batsman in a match against South Africa.
His domestic career includes playing for the Under-19s and the Under-22s team before stepping up to first-class cricket, making his one-day debut in the Ranji Trophy competition of 2006/07 against Assam. His first-class debut was in the 2007–08 Ranji Trophy against Hyderabad, where he scored 111 not out to become the 15th Bengal player to score a hundred on Ranji debut.
After scoring the century for Bengal on his Ranji debut, Saha signed a contract with Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008 where he was able to display his batting as well as wicketkeeping skills. He also has a record for making the fastest century in domestic cricket, scoring 102 runs of just 20 balls at a strike rate of 510 with 4 fours and 14 sixes.
Saha was included in the Indian Test squad as a reserve wicket-keeper in place of Dinesh Karthik on January 28, 2010 for the Test match series against South Africa. He was not expected to play as he was a reserve gloveman but had to step up after VVS Laxman and Rohit Sharma were out due to injury. So on February 6, 2010, Saha made his Test debut against South Africa at Nagpur where he scored a duck in the first innings, and 36 in the second innings.
In January 2012, he played in the fourth match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in place of MS Dhoni, who had been banned for slow over-rate. Saha's score of 35 in the first innings helped Virat Kohli make his maiden Test Century. He also toured South Africa in December 2013, New Zealand in February 2014 and England in July 2014 as part of the test squad but did not play.
Saha was once again selected on December 9, 2014 to replace MS Dhoni, who had injured his thumb, to play his first test match since January 2012 against Australia. He scored 25 in the first innings and 13 in the second.
In 2016 after he was selected for India's tour of West Indies as a wicket-keeper, Saha became the third wicket-keeper in Indian cricket history to feature in six dismissals in Test innings. Then in a match on January 8, 2018 against South Africa, Saha became the first wicket-keeper for India to take ten catches in a single Test.
After playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Saha was picked by Chennai Super Kings as a reserve wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni in the 2011 season. Then at the 2014 IPL auction, he was purchased by Kings XI Punjab as a specialist wicketkeeper. Saha was then bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in December 2018 during the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League.
Wriddhiman Saha was born on October 24, 1984 in Siliguri, West Bengal to Prashanta Saha and Maitrayee Saha, and he has one elder brother. He studied at the Siliguri Boys' High School and is married to Romi Saha who he has a daughter with.
