Zaira Wasim is a former Indian actress who worked in the Hindi film industry appearing in several Bollywood movies. She is the recipient of a number of awards, among them the National Film Award, Filmfare Award, Star Screen Award, and National Child Award.
In 2015, Zaira made her acting debut with biographical sports film Dangal alongside Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, and Suhani Bhatnagar. She played the role of wrestler Geeta Phogat as a youngster. Dangal emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film, and the fifth highest-grossing non-English film earning more than Rs 2,000 crore worldwide.
Zaira then starred in 2017 movie Secret Superstar alongside Meher Vij, Raj Arjun and Aamir Khan, and it became the highest-grossing Indian film featuring a female protagonist, the highest-grossing 2017 Hindi film, the third highest-grossing Indian film worldwide, and the second-highest-grossing Indian film overseas. The film received positive reviews and ten nominations at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, with Zaira garnering critical acclaim for her performance.
In June of 2019, Zaira announced that she will no longer continue her acting career and that her last film will be The Sky Is Pink co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar. The movie is a biopic of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary, a 19-year-old girl who died due to pulmonary fibrosis. The movie is set to be released in India on October 11, 2019.
Zaira Wasim was born on October 23, 2000 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir to Zahid and Zarqa Wasim, a Muslim family. Her father is an Executive Manager in the J&K Bank in Srinagar and her mother is a teacher. She finished her schooling from St. Paul's International Academy in Sonwar, Srinagar where she scored 92 per cent in her Board examinations.
In 2017, Zaira won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie Dangal and was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. The same year she won an award for Most Promising Newcomer (Female) at the Star Screen Awards for both Dangal and Secret Superstar. In November 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind honoured her with the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement, for her performances in both Dangal and Secret Superstar.
In 2018, she was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress and won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for her role in Secret Superstar. She was also nominated for Best Actress at the International Indian Film Academy Awards.
