You visit a place for a longer period of time as opposed to covering say four countries in seven days.

When you indulge in slow travel, your priority is not to cram in as many sightseeing options as possible. It’s more about doing things at your own pace and living throughly like a local in that city. And when you do that you leave behind the hectic, stressful feeling that stemmed from constantly being on the go. Here’s why you must give slow travel a chance.

Slow travel is kinder to your budget

Staying in one place for a week or more at a time reduces your transportation costs, which is where you can save a lot of money. Also, if you choose to stay in vacation rentals, they are often cheaper than hotels since they allow you to cook your own meal instead of eating out every time. You can look up vacation rentals on sites such as Airbnb, HomeAway and TripAdvisor.

A chance to get intimate with a new culture

The pace of slow travel is leisurely and laid-back; which leaves room to get up close and personal with the new culture of the place you’re in. That’s because you’re not just breezing through the major tourist sites. You step out and go to the local market, buy fresh, local ingredients, talk to people about how to cook a dish in their style and in the process forge new connections. Of course, it will require you to put in work to overcome language barriers and other potential stumbling blocks when you meet new people; but then it’ll all be worth it.

When you’re rushing through your list in a new country, you mostly pick up food on the go, without giving much thought to whether you’re at all trying the local food of the place you’re in. When you slow travel, you get a chance to seek out local ingredients and experience the regional food of the place you’re visiting. You have the time to leisurely find your favourite cafe and then show up in time to get the baguette right from the oven.

Less flights, more of other modes of transport (easier on the environment)

Fights are said to be the greatest factor in contributing to global warming. And if the idea of saving the environment appeals to you, and you want to reduce your carbon footprint while travelling, slow travel is perfect for you. If you’re travelling in places like Canada and Europe, trains are a comfortable and efficient mode of transport. Other ‘slow’ alternatives include renting a car, biking, river barging, and even walking.
