Air India may soon impose Rs 15 lakh fine on passengers who delay flights
One may think that holding up a flight is no big deal. Several incidents of unruly passengers wreaking havoc before or during flights have surfaced in the past few years alone. It is not uncommon for passengers to take undue advantage of the hospitality of airlines and delay flights causing inconvenience to other passengers. This may soon change thanks to a proposal by India’s national airline. Air India is contemplating a move which may force passengers to take airline procedures and timelines seriously. As part of a strict rule regime for passengers, Air India may propose a fine of Rs 5 lakh for delaying a flight upto an hour, Rs 10 lakh for a delay between one and two hours, and Rs 15 lakh for a delay beyond two hours. Just last month, the airline was in the news on account of Shiv Sena Mp Ravindra Gaikwad assaulting a staffer. The minister admitted on national TV that he hit the Air India employee onboard 25 times with his slippers. As a result, Air India had banned Ravindra Gaikwad from flying with them. However, after a letter from civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapati, the airline lifted this ban even with several pilots refusing to fly the MP unless he tendered an apology to the staffer. Air India’s proposal to impose heavy fines on unruly passengers may have come as an aftermath of this episode. According to reports, Air India will also be looking at drafting a No-Fly list with the help of the DGCA so that they can find a permanent solution to disruptive passengers by blacklisting them effectively.
