Reservation of seats for women isn’t a new concept in India. There are seats reserved for the fairer sex in trains, busses and metros and now on planes too. Air India is the first airline not just in India but in the world to give a go-ahead to this move. Starting January 18, women will have a few seats reserved for them on the airline’s domestic flights. A total of six seats will be reserved on every Air India domestic flight for women. The move has been in light of a recent incident where a woman was reportedly groped on board an Air India flight from Mumbai to Newark. The man who was flying business class, changed his seat to sit in the economy class next to the woman and groped her while she was asleep. The woman who woke up after the 40-year-old man touched her inappropriately complained to the cabin crew and a complaint was filed against him by the woman and Air India after the flight landed in Newark. The man was handed over to the police on arrival in the US. The incident had taken on December 21, 2016. Even though the incident took place on an international flight, the move to reserve seats for women will currently be implemented on domestic Air India flights only. While the idea is to have women sit next to each other so that they feel safe and comfortable when they travel alone, the reason behind it makes us wonder when will the time come when women would no longer have to worry about being unsafe when traveling alone.
