Airbnb is one of the best options for accommodation for people traveling on a shoestring budget along with those looking for something more personalized than a hotel room. The company was started by two design students, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia all the way back in 2007. However, back then, they were just a couple of unemployed students who put the spare room in their apartment up for rent to save some money. Meanwhile, Amol Surve, a young Indian design student, was looking for an affordable place to stay at in San Francisco in 2007, when he came across Air Bed & Breakfast. Since Gebbia and Chesky were designers too, he decided to stay with them. Funnily enough, their room had close to no furniture but just one air bed. Despite it all, Amol ended up having a cartload of fun during hive five-night stay. It was after Amol’s stay, they realized that the company’s core appeal is to provide personalized and affordable stays that give people a better opportunity to meet like-minded people while they’re traveling. By the next year, Chesky and Gebbia, two of the three founders of the company changed the name to Airbnb.

In 2015, close to 500,000 Indians have used Airbnb in India especially in urban cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Several places around the country give you the opportunity of living as somebody’s guest. In fact, Rita Sharma, Airbnb’s Super Host has put up three rooms in her house up on Airbnb with her husband and have hosted close to 600 guests since 2013. More and more listings get shared on the site and the company is definitely planning to pitch bigger in India soon.
