Today is Buddha Purnima 2017. It marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Prince Siddhartha who later came to be known as the great Gautama Buddha. Buddha is believed to have lived between 583 to 463 BC. His teachings are followed by a huge number of Buddhists all over the world today. India is home to a number of Buddhist monasteries and temples which are alluring tourist spots. On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, several devotees attend prayer sessions by monks, visit Buddhist centers, clean and decorate Buddha statues, wear white robes, abstain from non-vegetarian food and alcohol, and read out ancient verses in get-togethers. One of the major pilgrim sites associated with Gautama Buddha is Bodhgaya – the land where he attained enlightenment.
