Today, May 10, is Buddha Purnima 2017. Also known as Vesak, it’s a day that marks the birth of Gautama Buddha and an important cultural event in the faith. It is a day celebrated with solemnity and humbleness, reflecting on the three life stages of the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment and death. It is said that all three stages of the Buddha’s life happened on the same day. Depending on the community and the place, Buddha Purnima is celebrated in different ways, though there are some common elements. Prayers and sermons are given at temples and monasteries, and devotees and monks worship and meditate before a statue of Buddha. Candles, flowers, fruits and other offerings are placed on the statues that adorn Buddhist temples and monuments across India. To celebrate the occasion in our own way, we present to you some of the most incredible Buddha images that have been beautifully crafted over the centuries in the country.
