Chandra Taal, literally translates into Moon Lake, but the name does not do justice to the beauty of this vibrant blue lake amidst a rather arid Spiti Valley. It is believed that fairies fly over this lake at night and according to mythology, the eldest Pandava, Yudhistir was taken to heaven by Indra’s chariot from this lake.

A trek to Chandra Taal is a must for adventure enthusiasts; according to leading trek planners a trek to Chandra Taal swings from easy to moderate. Therefore, even novice trekkers can have as much fun on this trek as seasoned trekkers. Chatru, is the base camp for this trek, and from here it takes about 5 days to reach Chandra Taal.

However, there are multiple trekking routes to Chandra Taal. But the second best option is the one from Manali or Batal on foot. Chandra Taal is also accessible by road, though the conditions are not particularly good. The ideal thing to do would be to trek as much as you can, and then take a cab the rest of the way.

If you’ve ever dreamt of going on a trek in Ladakh, but couldn’t due to time or monetary constraints, Chandra Taal trek offers a similar landscape and feel. This is also a great spot for campers. Especially, from May to October when the vast meadows by the lake turn a lush green and are dotted with a huge variety of wildflowers.

It’s a one-of-a-kind outdoor Himalayan camping experience; located at 4,300 meters, all you see around you are glaciers, the mighty mountains of the Chandra Bhaga range, and of course the stunning turquoise blue lake. There are provisions for double layered wind proof winter tents, and Western toilets in most of the camps that are organised here; so that your comfort isn’t compromised.
