The journey time between Chennai and Port Blair is about 60 hours. It takes 56 hours from Vishakhapatnam and 66 hours from Kolkata.

What is the frequency of ships from Chennai to Port Blair?

The frequency of ships connecting Chennai and Port Blair is low. The sailing schedules of the ships are prepared  just one month in advance and they are approved by A&N Administration. There are about four services in a month from Chennai and the ships leave from Chennai port.  The ships usually stay in Port Blair for around three days. There are five passenger-cum-cargo ships operating between the island and the mainland. These ships have cinema, swimming pool, food and other basic facilities. The A&N Administration that runs these ships has some very specific recommendations in case you get sea sick. A form lists out the following items that you should carry to cure any sea sickness: three lemons, three Avomine tablets, 200 gm of pickle, three packets of bread, 250 grams of jam, three packets of salt biscuits and five apples/oranges.

If voyages don’t interest you, Port Blair is well-connected to all major metros. The flight from Chennai to Port Blair takes around two and half hours.

Cost: One-way fare for a single person. The cost of food is not included in the ticket price.The food on the ship will cost around Rs 100 for Bunk passengers and Rs 150 for Cabin passengers per day per person.

How to Book ship ticket: You cannot book ship tickets online. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has started Personal Area Networking (PAN), connecting one ticketing counter each at Kolkata and Chennai as well as nine counters in the islands. PAN is called Star Ticket Advance Reservation System or STARS. You have to visit the counters to book a ticket.
