The revered Chithirai Festival went underway at Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman temple on April 18. With several auspicious events and prayer sessions held every day since then, the festival is reaching its last few days. This grand affair will be held today at the Meenkashi Amman temple (also known as Meenkashi-Sundereshwara temple) and several meticulous arrangements have been made for this special day. Air conditioning has been set up inside the venue which can hold 16,000 devotees. Basic amenities like drinking water have been arranged too. Huge LCD monitors have been installed for people to get a clear view of the proceedings. There are 20 LED screens to telecast the event, of which 6 are inside the temple. People are not allowed to bring cell phones inside the temple. Lockers have been arranged outside for safe keeping of phones. Wedding gifts will only be collected in the temple premises and nowhere else. Necessary receipts will be provided for any gifts presented.
