There has never been a better time to visit Shimla, the Queen of Hills. Under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first flight from Delhi to Shimla that will cost just Rs 2500. Launched with an aim of building efficient regional air connectivity, UDAN is the central government’s subsidized air regional connectivity scheme offering flights at the subsidized fare of Rs 2500 per hour of flight. The subsidized fare is a boon for budget travalers as well as tour operators who will benefit from the better connectivity. The aviation ministry will fund the subsidy by charging a landing fee on airlines that will be operating on the trunk routes. “Airfare for a 1-hour journey of approximately 500 km on a fixed wing aircraft or for a 30-minute journey on a helicopter would be capped at Rs. 2,500,” the PMO said. The Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme was announced by the aviation ministry in October, 2016 as a measure to provide air connectivity to unserved and underserved airports in the country. It was also a major component of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) released on June 15, 2016. A release from the government stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first UDAN flight under RCS on the Shimla-Delhi sector on April 27, 2017. Simultaneously, he will also flag off the inaugural UDAN flights on Kadapa – Hyderabad and Nanded-Hyderabad sectors. With regard to the Delhi-Shimla route, a regular flight, which will operate five days in a week from Wednesday, will depart at 6.10 a.m. from Delhi arriving Simla at 7.25 a.m. On the same day, it will depart from Shimla at 7.45 a.m. and will return to Delhi at 8.45 a.m. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a day-long Shimla visit scheduled to grace the inauguration with his presence.
