1. Pack light

If your vacation involves air travel, make sure you pack light because every kilo you add to your bag has a direct impact on the environment. This is because the heavier the plane is the more carbon it emits which you know isn’t doing us or Mother Earth any good. So pack only essentials and not your entire world for a week-long trip. 2. Stay in an eco-friendly hotel

With the need to protect the environment, many hotels these days are turning green in order to reduce their carbon footprint. They use sustainable energy resources and help conserve the natural habitat of the place by not tampering too much with it and having a minimal impact on it. Staying in one of these can mean that you do your bit without really doing much. And no, you won’t miss out on any of the luxuries that a normal hotel has, but you will surely feel closer to nature in this one.

3. Use public transport

Yes, hailing a cab or hiring a private vehicle is no doubt a bit more comfortable but using the city’s public transport will win you brownie points in being an eco-friendly traveler. Not to forget that you can will often have an interesting story to share observing and interacting with the locals of the place. And whenever possible, explore the destination on foot. You will not believe how much more you see and discover simply walking on the streets. If you love to cycle, hire a bike.

4. Eat and drink local

Eating the local specialties not only gives a taste of the place, it is also kinder on the environment. This is because getting the food you eat back home means more carbon emission. The same rule applies to drinks too. Have a pint of locally-brewed ale or a glass of local wine. Going local is always a good idea to truly soak in a new place.

5. Avoid plastic

Now this may seem like a generic tip but it is highly important that you follow it during your travels too as we are likely to use more plastic unknowingly on a vacation. Avoid drinking bottled water. Instead carry a reusable bottle that you can refill. Take a cloth bag with you when you go shopping for souvenirs. Remember, plastic takes 500 years to biodegrade and causes a lot of harm to our precious Earth.
