The usually chill Indian state of Goa will be burning up this May, literally, with the Igitun Chalne event scheduled to take place in the month. Igitun Chalne is a festival celebrated at the Sirigao temple in Bicholim, North Goa. Over the years, it has evolved from a religious festival to a cultural event, attracting several visitors and tourists each year. The festival celebrates the goddess Lairaya, and it gets its name from a grueling ritual where devotees walk across burning coal. This act of devotion is witnessed by everyone across the state and from other parts of the country. People cheer on the devotees as they commit the daring act, and the sheer energy and frenzy experienced at this time is remarkable. Igitun Chalne literally translates to ‘fire walking’, and the ritual itself typically happens at night, following which there is plenty of revelry.
