One of the newest outposts of Social has thrown its doors open to the public. Located in the same building as Fun Republic Cinemas in Andheri (W), this brand new social doffs its hat to all things retro and Bollywood. Also Read - Star Sports Brings The Best of IPL Rivalries This June

For someone who has always harbored a Woody Allen-esque fantasy of getting into an omnibus and traveling back in time to the Bombay of yore, Fun Republic Social is a dream come true. This is the 12th Social in the country and the sixth in Mumbai. And while, by this point, most restaurants run the risk of being just another chain, Social is still quite a distance from being a stereotype. Fun Republic Social is located in the same lane as two of the biggest film/TV production houses in the country. Yash Raj Films is right next door and Balaji is just across the street. Andheri is home to several TV and movie stars and it only seemed fair that Fun Republic Social paid tribute to the entertainment industry.

Step inside Fun Republic Social and you’ll be welcomed by floral fabric wallpapers, a curtained stage and an assortment of oddities sourced painfully from antique markets of the city.

Chandeliers may well be a thing of the past but over this large community table they seem just perfect.

Even the bar is designed to hark back to a time when kitsch ruled Bollywood, the banister setting it apart from the rest of the eating area.

Nilesh Patel, the young F&B manager convinced us to try out some of the newest concoctions from the bar. The first was Moonshine, not the illicitly produced spirit but rather a rum cocktail is served with fryums and in a bottle of country liquor or desi daru. Equally delightful was Shimla Mirch Martini, both of which went wonderfully with Ghee Mutton Roast and Chooza 69.

The kitsch theme continues with the mirrors on the ceiling in one area

And wallpapers on the ceiling in another.

Fun Republic Social also has a dedicated smoking area with mug shots of ‘90s movies stars looking at you while you puff your life away. Either side of the smoking area pays tribute to the film that defined the ‘90s: Andaz Apna Apna

As with all the others, Fun Republic Social also has a dedicated members-only space which can be accessed for a monthly fee of Rs 5,000. The membership lets you access the space from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 6 pm with access to high-speed internet. The amount is redeemable on food and drinks for the duration and you have access to all Socials across the country.

The members-only space has cubicles like these with swivel doors, yet again a relic of the ‘80s.

In several ways, Fun Republic Social is like no other Social, we’ve been to so far but stays true to the Social design philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum upcycling. Visit it to believe it!
