Today is Ganga Dussehra. It’s the day when thousands of Hindu devotees take a dip in the holy Ganges river to wash away their sins. It is believed that a sage named Bhagirath prayed for years for Ganga to descend on earth and it was on this day, his prayers were answered. It marks the day of river Ganga’s descent on planet Earth. Varanasi is also extremely popular for its Ganga aarti which attracts tourists, devotees and enthusiasts from all across the globe. Even on the day of Ganga Dussehra, the several priests perform prayers and chant hymns which are repeated by the thousands of devotees who almost go in a trance during the rituals. Such devotion for the Ganges can only be witnessed during the aarti in Varanasi. The lamps, the prayers, the chants and the thousands of people who pray in unison and seek the blessings of the river together form a mesmerizing scene making the whole experience divine and rejuvenating.
