Gatari Amavasya is an important day in the Hindu calendar. It falls on the No Moon day in the ashada month of the Marathi calendar. This day is called the Ashada Amavasya. Typically, Gatari Amavasya usually falls in the months of July or August. It marks the arrival of the auspicious month of Shravan for Hindus. Gatari Amavasya 2017 falls on July 23. Post the day of Gatari Amavasya, Hindu devotees abstain from non-vegetarian food and alcohol for the following 40 days. Gatari gets its name from the word ‘gutter’. It is a fun take on the possibility of people passing out in a gutter after drinking to one’s heart’s content on the day of Gatari. Generally, it is considered good practice to avoid eating non-vegetarian food and consumption of alcohol during auspicious days and months. This makes Gatari Amavasya and important day for people to enjoy so that it gives them enough satisfaction to be able to abstain for the following month.
