When you are on the road, especially at obscure places where you haven’t been before, finding a toilet can be a humongous task. India is quite infamous for its toilet problem with sanitation issues arising on account of the fact that 60 percent of the 1.2 billion Indians still defecate and urinate in the open according to Public Radio International. In fact, 70 percent of households in India do not have their own toilets. With this in mind, Google has joined hands with India’s Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) to develop a toilet locator tool within the widely used Maps. This will give enable people to search for toilets within Maps by keying in relevant words. They can use English or their native language as the locator will recognize terms like “toilet,” “lavatory,” “swachhata” and “shulabh.” Maps will then show them available toilets in their vicinity. This toilet locator will function in the same way that Maps locates hotels, restaurants, movie halls and other places of interest. An Indian government official revealed that the success of this project will also rely on information provided by users themselves. When people to let other users know of a particular location’s condition through this locator. This kind of crowdsourcing has come to become prominent in the travel domain as most travelers rely on word of mouth information provided by other travelers. Users will be able to give a bad rating to toilets which aren’t clean or are already closed. This kind of feedback is what will fuel the tool and make it useful. The toilet locator tool is all set to be launched soon. In fact, if all goes well, it will be available in Delhi before the end of November. It will display locations of public toilets as well as toilets in malls, gas stations, hospitals and other places anyone can go to. While expansion of the tool to other urban regions of India may take some time since the MoUD doesn’t have a concrete plan or timeline yet, this will be a very good beginning and a step in the right direction.
